Scottish Coal currently operates a number of opencast
coal sites throughout Scotland.
Site working is planned well in advance and involves
soil stripping and storage, removal and storage of sub-soils and
overburden, to expose the coal seams and allow extraction of coal.
All of this requires the use of heavy plant and machinery. Sometimes
the use of explosives is required to gain access to the coal. Coal
is transported to market by road and rail.
The sites are designed to ensure that soils and
overburden storage mounds provide visual screening and reduce noise
We are always looking at any new and innovative ways to do business.
The coal moving conveyor belt system at our Glentaggart
site is one of the largest conveyor systems in Europe and stretches for
over 6.5 Kilometres. This conveyor has reduced the number of vehicle
trips by over 30,000 trips per year which is good news for the environment.
